The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Fudan University is one of the earliest established pediatric cardiothoracic surgery majors in China, founded by Professor Shantong Zhang in 1979. Under the leadership of former directors Zhanggen Chen and Bing Jia, the department has continuously grown and made significant progress in discipline construction, talent cultivation, and social services over the past 30 years. The department has a complete brand team of cardiothoracic surgery, cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO, intensive care unit and nursing, which is evaluated as a national key clinical specialty. The department has performed over 20000 pediatric cardiovascular surgeries so far, with a success rate of over 99%. Extensive cooperation was established with internationally renowned institutions such as Maine Heart Center in the United States, Chicago Children's Hospital, Vancouver Children's Hospital in Canada, and Hong Kong Children's Hospital, which has significantly improved the clinical business capabilities of the department.
In recent years, the number of surgeries for children with chest diseases has significantly increased, with over 1000 cases of various cardiothoracic surgeries performed each year. Minimally invasive treatments are routinely performed for various chest diseases such as congenital cystic diseases of lung, chest wall deformities, chest tumors, and diaphragmatic diseases. The department has accumulated rich clinical experience in the treatment of various congenital heart diseases, and has made breakthrough progress especially in the treatment of complex congenital heart diseases in newborns and infants. In addition, the department is leading in the field of reoperations of complex congenital heart diseases and correction of end-stage heart failure in China. Currently, the department has obtained the qualification for heart transplantation and has successfully carried out heart transplantation for children with end-stage heart failure. In recent years, the department has been dedicated to clinical research on pediatric valve surgery and has achieved good therapeutic results.
The department currently accommodates 35 beds for cardiothoracic surgery and 12 beds for cardiac intensive care unit. There are 15 in-service physicians, including 2 chief physicians, 5 deputy chief physicians, and 2 master's supervisors. All doctors have master's and doctoral degrees, as well as overseas training experience.
