The Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the Children's Hospital of Fudan University was established in 1996. Since its inception, the department has continuously improved its disciplinary framework and academic team building, gradually establishing multiple specialized centers and disciplines. Currently, the department comprises four specialized centers: the Shanghai Children's Hearing Impairment Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Pediatric Nasopharyngeal and Tracheal Endoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Pediatric Snoring (Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome) Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and the Congenital Cleft Palate and Airway Structural Abnormalities Diagnosis and Treatment Center.
The department boasts a well-equipped outpatient area, offering not only general outpatient clinic and specialist clinics but also specialized clinics for conditions such as "hearing impairment," "allergic rhinitis," "secretory otitis media," and "complex airway diseases," catering to the diverse needs of patients. The average annual outpatient volume reaches 140,000 visits. The department also has an independent inpatient ward for otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery, with nearly 5,000 inpatient surgeries annually, including over 800 surgeries of premium cases and patients in overseas Chinese families.
Over the past decade, our department has led the publication of more than ten guidelines and expert consensuses on pediatric otorhinolaryngology and related diseases. In 2020, our department spearheaded the establishment of the National Children's Medical Center and the National Children's Clinical Research Center for Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, as well as the Child Allergy Committee (a Subsociety) under the China Maternal and Child Health Association. Zhengmin Xu serves as the honorary chairman, and Wenxia Chen was elected as a standing committee member. Our department ranks among the top 5 in the national pediatric otorhinolaryngology specialty.
